Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sector 31 Chandigarh was established in 1974 under the patronage of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan, New Delhi an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Like all Kendriya Vidyalayas, KV Sector 31 too adheres to four fold Principles:
* To cater to the education needs of the children of transferable Central Government employees, including Defence and Paramilitary personnel, by, providing common programme of education in co ordination with Kendriva Vidyalayas all over India and abroad.
* To Preserve Excellence.
* To initiate and promote experiments and innovation in education in collaboration with other bodies like CBSE and NCERT etc. To Develop the spirit of National Integration.
The admissions are no longer restricted to Central Govt. Employees only. They are open for all. However, certain procedures have been laid down to decide the priority categories of children for admissions. 15%, 7.5% and 3% of seats are reserved for Sc, St and Physically handicapped categories of children respectively.
In pursuance of the above objectives KV Sector 31 has carved for itself a niche as the MODEL SCHOOL of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. A day at the school begins with the Morning Assembly where 2000 students stand as one in offering obeisance to the Almighty. Students undergo training in various fields. Every Saturday students of the primary section are given an opportunity to compete in inter- house competitions like Group Dance, Group Song, Poetry recitation, Clay Modeling, Display board, Fancy Dress. For the comprehensive development of the child's personality, the Vidyalaya focuses on all fundamental aspects of the child's personality - Physical, Mental, Emotional and Cultural.
KV Sector 31 is a 04 section co-education school from class I to XII. It is one of the few institutions in the city to offer all the streams - Medical, Non Medical, Commerce and Humanities. The medium of instruction at present is bi lingual. Mathematics and Science subjects are taught and through the medium of English, Social Science is taught through the medium of Hindi as well as English. The School is affiliated to CBSE and follows the CBSE syllabus. In the Primary Section education in imparted through group activities and play way methods. Technically aided Education in the School's Resource Room is a daily routine. The Room is well equipped with overhead Projector, a Computer Set, Auto Slide Projector and LCD Projector. The school has two Computer labs with 37 computers. The School's Library houses a rich collection of nearly 17,000 books. Latest Periodicals related to the almost every project taught in the school are available in the library. The School building is well built with spacious class rooms, three fully equipped Science labs viz. Physics, Chemistry and Biology, a Junior Science lab, two Computer Labs, Drawing, Music, Geography, Games, Sports and Work experience (SUPW) rooms.
